Town Centre First
Ballyhaunis is Mayo’s second town to receive funding to develop a plan under the Town Centre First Programme, aimed at supporting the regeneration of Irish rural town centres with a strong focus on addressing dereliction and vacancy and improving public spaces.

Ballyhaunis’ Town Centre First (TCF) plan is a blueprint for future development which aims to make the town a more attractive place to live, work, visit and run a business. Naturally, the views, ideas and knowledge of the local community, businesses, residents of Ballyhaunis and its hinterland are fundamental in this process, building on the strong foundation established through the Mayo Community Futures Programme which has already delivered two plans for Ballyhaunis.
The Town Centre First Planning process takes a bottom-up approach to development, identifying priorities for project delivery with short, medium and long-term goals. The resulting plan will provide a blueprint for the future development of the town, strengthen funding applications and assist in securing necessary funding to deliver strategic projects.
An essential part of the Town Centre First process is the formation of a Town Team: Ballyhaunis Town Team are an enthusiastic group of Ballyhaunis people who have come together to do the best for the town, to drive it forward positively and inclusively.
Ballyhaunis Town Team members have diverse backgrounds, skills and experiences and are all active in Ballyhaunis in different ways: business, sports, arts, culture, community, tidy towns, biodiversity, festivals & events.

This comprehensive plan is the result of 12 months of meetings between Mayo County Council, stakeholders within the community and the consultant team.
Town Centre First is the Government's policy strategy to support the rejuvenation of Irish rural town centres and halt their decline. The initiative is a key part of Our Rural Future - the Government's ambitious five-year strategy designed to reimagine and revitalise Rural Ireland. The Town Centre First Policy is a coordinated, whole of government approach to regenerate and revitalise Irish towns and villages.
Mayo County Council appointed a multidisciplinary design team lead by TBLA to prepare this non-statutory Masterplan for Ballyhaunis.
