Heritage Week 2023

#HeritageWeek2023 is upon us again from 12th-20th August where we celebrate Ireland's cultural, built and natural heritage.

Our volunteers are organising a great line up of events and activities for all the family.

Sat, August 12, 8pm in the Community Hall

Kicking off the week we celebrate the start of Lúnasa with poetry, song and dance. Set dancing to traditional Irish music on the night. Members of the international Le Cairde Ballyhaunis will also be performing on the evening.

Sun, August 13th, 2:30pm in the Friarygrounds

Get a vivid view of the flora and fauna around the Friary Grounds with the fun and engaging Aengus Kennedy of Nature Northwest. Organised with the support from Local Authority Waters Programme (Lawpro), this outdoor excursion includes a fun scavenger hunt for children. Meet at the Friary carpark at 2:30pm.

Fri, August 18th, 8pm in the Community Hall

Pat Glynn of Glynn's Photography has amassed a collection of photographs documenting pivotal moments and families in Ballyhaunis. Come for a special evening to relive those memories in a special showing.

Sun August 20th, 1pm in the Friary Church

Welcome all to the Harvest Mass in St. Mary's Abbey Church on the Friary Grounds. Following the mass Paul Waldron of Annagh Magazine Society will provide a guided tour of the church and highlight special artefacts and treasures in the church.

Mon, August 21st, 8pm in the Community Hall (TBC)

The late Sher Mohammed Rafique turned a small abattoir on Clare Road into multimillion dollar meat processing factory exporting halal meat to the Middle East and beyond. Learn about his humble beginnings in Central Pakistan to his journey to build a business empire and his lasting legacy in building Ireland's first purpose-built Mosque in Ballyhaunis from his son Imran Rafique.

Thanks to Ballyhaunis Tidy Town, the Abbey Trust, and Lawpro for their support and for the sponsorship of local businesses to have these events in the Community Hall.
