‘Conas a deireann tú?’ for Culture Night 2022

Following on from the well received "Pushing an Open Door" project last year, we celebrated Inclusion in our Diverse Community of Ballyhaunis with ‘Conas a deireann tú?' or 'How do you say?'. This event explored ways and means of making the Irish language accessible to all in the community. In collaboration with the Ballyhaunis Language Cafes, we compiled a list of common nouns in Irish and translated them into some 30 different languages spoken in the area.

Says Ruairi O'Broin, project lead of Culture Night: "We have a fabulous diverse multicultural community in Ballyhaunis and believe that we should celebrate that, and collaborating as often as possible enriches our community and strengthens our bonds of friendship."

The finished work will then be compiled into a binder to which, from time to time, more words can be added and it will be available for reference in the Library.

Traditional Irish musicians Pat and Brian O'Connor played an original composition at the event held at the Friary Church on Friday, September 23rd.

Councillor John Cribben attended the evening and presented an award to Merrilyn Winters for running the Language Cafes and her commitment and service to the Ballyhaunis community.

This event is brought to you by Ballyhaunis Community Council and the Ballyhaunis Language Cafes in collaboration with Ballyhaunis Family Resource Centre, the Ballyhaunis Community School, Foróige Youth Service, and the Ballyhaunis Chamber of Commerce with support from the Mayo County Council, the Arts Council and Creative Ireland. Thanks to the Ballyhaunis Abbey Partnership for use of the beautiful Friary Church venue and to all the students and residents in Ballyhaunis for participating.
